Sumit Basu is a Researcher in the Knowledge Tools Group at Microsoft Research, Redmond. His research focus is on developing interactive, machine-learning based tools to assist users in understanding and extracting answers from complex data – from finding malicious packets in their network data to helping them with their creative endeavors. His recent work includes Songsmith: a songwriting tool that takes melodies as input and uses statistical modeling to help users develop accompaniments for them.
